Ranchi, July 6: A team of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA) and the district legal services authority (DLSA) today inspected the Birsa Munda central jail following the suicide by an undertrial prisoner Somra Oraon.

The authority swung into action after JHALSA Executive Chairman Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad took suo motu cognizance of the suicide by Somra Oraon, who has been behind bars since 2017 for the murder of his wife.

Justice Prasad ordered the JHALSA and the DLSA to immediately form a team and inspect Birsa Munda Central Jail and provide proper legal assistance to the family members of the deceased.

JHALSA-DLSA team rushes to Birsa Munda jail

Following this instruction, JHALSA Deputy Secretary Abhishek Kumar and Ranchi DLSA Secretary Kamlesh Behera rushed to Birsa Munda Central Jail for immediate inspection and also observed the CCTV footage. The family members of the deceased were also informed immediately because the deceased and his family members are residents of Khakpatra village of Lohardaga. Therefore, the District Legal Services Authority Lohardaga was contacted and informed to provide legal assistance to the family members of the deceased. On this, the DLSA Lohardaga immediately met the family members of the deceased and provided all the necessary material to his family members under the NALSA guidelines and has also started the process of linking the family members of the deceased with various government welfare schemes.

Notably, undertrial prisoner Somra Oraon committed suicide by hanging himself with the help of a towel in the bathroom of the jail hospital at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar at 4.30 am on Friday.
