Dhanbad, June 28: The second batch of 13 students from IIT ISM Dhanbad has commenced specialized training at St. Petersburg Mining University, Russia, as part of the Indo-Russian academic collaboration programme. The training, which began this week, focuses on current trends in the oil and gas industry and will continue until July 6.

An IIT ISM official stated that the initiative is part of the Summer/Winter School programme, supported by the International Centre for Competence in Mining Engineering Education under the patronage of UNESCO and IIT ISM. The aim is to enhance global academic collaboration while providing hands-on experience in critical energy sectors.

Multiple Batches Undergoing International Training

The ongoing programme includes four student batches in total. The first batch of nine students and scholars has been undergoing training in Petroleum Geology from June 16 to June 29 at the same university.

The third batch, comprising 12 students, will begin training in digital mining from June 30 to July 13. The fourth batch, with eight students and scholars, will participate in a training module scheduled from July 14 to July 27.

Professor Saurabh Datta Gupta, Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Geophysics, who is coordinating the programme, highlighted its academic and practical value. “This collaboration opens new avenues for our students to gain industry-relevant knowledge through international exposure,” he said.

Comprehensive Learning with Cultural Exchange

The training modules offer a blend of theoretical instruction, hands-on learning, master classes, intensive academic sessions, and field visits to real-world production sites. Students will also engage in sightseeing and cultural activities, providing a holistic international experience.

The programme is being conducted under the guidance of Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT ISM, and Deputy Director Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, in collaboration with the institute’s Academic, International Relations & Alumni Affairs (IRAA) section.

IIT ISM officials emphasized that such international initiatives reflect the institute’s ongoing commitment to equipping students with global competencies and strengthening academic partnerships worldwide.

Through this Indo-Russian collaboration, students not only gain exposure to advanced practices in the energy and mining sectors but also develop a broader global perspective essential for future leadership in the industry.
