Jharkhand News: BIT Sindri NSS, ACE launch project to educate school girls on menstrual hygiene

Dhanbad, March 13: National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Association of Civil Engineers (ACE) of BIT Sindri have launched an ambitious project, ‘Badlav’, the first of its kind in any technical institution in the region, for awareness of female students in remote schools.

NSS-ACE campaigners said that under the project ‘Badlav,’ they would distribute free sanitary pads, hold workshops to make girls’ students aware of ‘Good Touch and Bad Touch’, and discuss hygiene and menstruation-related myths.

Dr Raghunandan, professor in charge of NSS, and Dr Prafulla Kumar Sharma, professor in charge of ACE, BIT Sindri, jointly inaugurated the first programme of the project ‘Badlav’ at DAV Public School Tasra.

While addressing the function, Principal Umesh highly appreciated the students of BIT Sindri for organising such a noteworthy event in the school. He also stressed the importance of the awareness programme ‘Badlav’.

During the workshop, the school students were provided with detailed explanations of good touch, bad touch, hygiene, and menstruation-related myths.

Adarsh Kumar, president of the Association of Civil Engineers, highlighted the importance of the menstrual hygiene awareness programme. This programme educates individuals on proper cleanliness habits, enhancing menstruating women’s self-esteem and overall health.

“The Good and Bad Touch awareness programme empowers us to recognise and report inappropriate physical contact, fostering a secure environment. Both initiatives prioritise empowerment and education, significantly benefiting individual welfare and preventing abuse,” he said.

Vivek Kumar, the president of NSS BIT Sindri, stressed the importance of educating both boys and girls, including young children, about menstrual hygiene and recognising good and bad touch. They aim to eliminate taboos and promote a culture of openness and respect for bodily autonomy, fostering a safer and more informed society.

The programme involved all the teachers of DAV Public School Tasra students: Ramashankar Lal, Tribhuvan Choudhary, Nirmal Mahato, Kumari Shivdulari, and Pratima Kujur. Vivek Kumar, president of NSS, BIT Sindri Priyanshu Keshari, secretary, ACE, BIT Sindri secretary Akash Bhushan.
