Dhanbad, April 5: Dhanbad police on Friday morning recovered cash of Rs 34.74 lakh from a Tata Harrier on inter-state NH-2 at the Maithon check post of the Jharkhand-Bengal border, around 48 km away from the district headquarters.

The officer in charge of Maithon, OP Rajnish Kumar, told the media that the Tata Harrier car was going from Durgapur in West Bengal to the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. During a routine vehicle check-up at the Maithon check post on the border, cash of Rs 34.74 lakh was recovered from the car (WB40AX 6001).

The car was seized at 8 am.

Car riders Arindam Chakrabarty and Srikant are residents of Durgapur and they claimed they are mineral oil traders and were going to Hazaribagh for business.

Maithon police immediately informed the Income Tax Department Dhanbad about the recovery of cash from the vehicle and began interrogation of car riders.

In 20 hours, this was the second time police had recovered a heavy amount on the inter-state GT road. On Thursday morning, Giridih police recovered Rs 1.9 crores from Gaya to Kolkata bound bus on inter-State GT Road under Bagodar police station.

In the wake of the Lok Sabha election, Dhanbad and Giridih police have launched a particular checking drive on Interstate GT Road. On Wednesday night, Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner Madhvi Mishra and Senior Superintendent of Police  HP Janardhan assessed the checking process at the Maithon check post.

Earlier, Bokaro range DIG Surendra Jha had also visited the Maithon check post and was directed to screen all vehicles.
