Suspended TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh sent to 14-day judicial custody in money laundering case

Kolkata, April 15: In an Enforcement Directorate (ED) case involving allegations of money laundering in the guise of a pisciculture firm, suspended TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh was subjected to 14 days of judicial custody by a special PMLA court here on Monday.

The ED arrested Sheikh on March 30 for his involvement in a case where a mob attacked the agency’s officials en route to search his premises in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, on January 5 in connection to a separate money laundering case.

Sheikh accused of money laundering in land grabbing case

Special judge Prasanta Mukhopadhyay of the PMLA court at Bichar Bhavan here sent Sheikh, who had been in ED custody for the past few weeks due to a court order, to judicial remand for a period of 14 days.

ED counsel Abhijit Bhadra requested that Sheikh be remanded to judicial custody.

In this case, the ED has accused Sheikh of engaging in money laundering by diverting funds obtained from land grabbing under the pretext of a pisciculture business, which harmed vulnerable villagers.

CBI probing ED attack case

When an ED team went to search Sheikh’s residence in Sarberia village, Sandeshkhali on January 5, they were ambushed by a crowd of around 1,000 people in relation to a case involving ration distribution scam.

As per a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the assault incident, where Sheikh is accused of masterminding a mob attack on ED officials to obstruct their raid on his property.
