Ranchi, April 22: The Jharkhand Legal Services Authority launched an action plan to provide legal aid to pregnant women prisoners lodged in the jails of Jharkhand on Sunday, April 21.

During the first State-level meeting of the State Legal Aid Defense Counsels (LADC) JHALSA also decided to run a six-week long campaign to provide legal aid to men and women living in old age homes in the State.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, judge of the Jharkhand High Court and acting Chairman of JHALSA, said that in the first meeting of LADC they should brainstorm as to how they can enhance their legal skills and benefit from them so as to incorporate the purpose and intention of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

He said that the concept of legal aid was created by making the Legal Services Authorities Act in the year 1987. The reason for bringing the law is to achieve the Directive Principles of State Policy and reach the last mile with the aim of bringing people into the justice delivery system.

On the occasion, Justice Anand Sen said that LADC and DLSA of each district can bridge the gap between those entitled to get justice and the deprived. Justice Dr SN Pathak said that the work and duty of JHALSA is to provide relief to the deprived class. It is the ultimate duty of JHALSA to take care of the deprived class who have not received any facilities provided by the state.

JHALSA’s Member Secretary Kumari Ranjana Asthana gave the welcome speech in the programme. Four technical sessions took place in the programme. The technical session was addressed by Justice SN Pathak, while Justice Deepak Roshan, Justice Pradeep Kumar Srivastava, Associate Professor of ICFAI University Dr. Alok Kumar, Dr. Mithilesh Pandey among others spoke on the occasion.
