Dhanbad, April 24: Dr Avinash Chettri of Freidrich Schiller University, Germany, guided the technocrats of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad on use of photonics in applied science and basics of transient absorption spectroscopy.

Dr Chettri, who was addressing the ‘Expert Talk’ programme said that the ability of light to initiate photo chemical reactions is not unknown and the scientific community has embraced this knowledge by designing photo responsive systems which promise in the field of energy storage, therapeutics and controlling the biochemical reactions..

The programme was jointly organized by Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology IIT ISM at Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray seminar hall on the subject of “ Unravelling the Excited-State Dynamics of Light Responsive Materials with Time Resolved Spectroscopy”.

Undergraduate, Post Graduate students, Research Scholars and faculty members of the institution attended the programme in large numbers.

Dr Avinash Chettri is also a notable alumnus of the institute.

During the Expert Talk, two key issues ‘Molecular Photosynthesizer and second on Pyrenol-based polyphotoacid were also discussed in detail during the lecture coordinated by Prof Sumanta Kumar Padhi.

“In general the photochemistry of such a system depends on the photo physical landscape which it adopts upon excitation”, explained Dr Chhetri.

He added that these excited-state landscapes can be tuned rationally by changing the chemical entity and local environment to steer the system towards a direction which demands its application.

Dr Chettri said these pathways could be ‘ultrafast’ (typically occurring within a picosecond to “ultraslow ) ,taking several microseconds (µs) for the process to complete .

He said spectroscopic techniques which utilizes pulsed-laser sources such as time-resolved emission and absorption (also known as pump-probe spectroscopy) spectroscopy are often used for investigating these processes.
