Actor Jackie Shroff petitions Delhi HC to safeguard his personality rights including use of word ‘Bhidu’

New Delhi, May 14: In an effort to safeguard his personality and rights to publicity, actor Jackie Shroff filed a petition with the Delhi High Court on Tuesday.

The petition has been lodged against various individuals and entities for utilizing his name, images, voice, and the term ‘bhidu’ for commercial purposes without his authorization.

Justice Sanjeev Narula thoroughly examined the matter and issued summonses to the defendants.

The court has scheduled a hearing for Jackie Shroff’s case on May 15, with the court potentially issuing a temporary order after the proceedings on Wednesday.

What does Jackie’s petition mention?

Jackie’s lawyer objected to the unauthorized use of his rights through the sale of ringtones, wallpapers, and merchandise, labelling it as “misuse.”

He also raised concerns about “derogatory” memes, GIFs, and the utilization of artificial intelligence. Additionally, he alleged the violation of his trademark rights concerning the Marathi term “bhidu” (meaning “partner”).

In his petition to the High Court, the seasoned actor has requested safeguarding for the names Jackie Shroff, Jackie, Jaggu Dada, as well as Bhidu, asserting that his characteristics should not be utilized without his consent on any platform.

He also urged for directives to the Department of Technology and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) to eliminate all links and websites that unlawfully infringe upon his personality rights.
