Ranchi, May 31: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) today rushed a team to Jarga village under Angada police station where Baleshwar Oraon, 60, and his wife were allegedly beaten up, a couple of days back, by their neighbours, who accused them of practising black magic.

Five women have been arrested in this connection.

The DLSA swung into action after JHALSA Executive Chairman Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad took cognisance of the gruesome incident.

Rs 10,000 for victim’s family

DLSA Secretary Kamlesh Behera met the victim’s family and provided a cheque of Rs 10,000 as interim compensation to the family of the deceased under the Victim Compensation Scheme.

The DLSA will also assist the victim’s family in the case and has appointed Advocate Dulari Kumari for free legal aid.

Victim’s wife admitted to Sadar Hospital

Also, the deceased’s wife, injured Shanichariya Devi, was given proper treatment at Ranchi Sadar Hospital and her Ayushman card was also made from Sadar Hospital under the Ayushman Bharat Health Scheme.

Apart from this, under the welfare scheme of the government, the process of making a widow pension for the wife of the deceased and job cards for the three sons was also taken forward.

Angada Block Development Officer Jaipal Soy, who was present on the spot, assured employment to the three sons of the deceased under MNREGA.

Legal awareness camp

Later, a legal awareness camp was also organized among the villagers in Jarga and Tetri Toli of Angada Block under the leadership of DALSA Secretary, where Block Development Officer, Angada, Jaipal Soy, Angada Police Station In-charge, Chamra Minj, Panel Advocate, Dulari Kumari, Village Mukhiya, Christina, PLV Baby Sinha were present.

Behera, on this occasion, said that witch-hunting is a superstition, and there is a provision of punishment for it in the law.

Jaipal Soy said that such an incident is condemnable. “People are harassed in the name of witch-hunting, which is completely wrong,” he added.
