Prayagraj, July 25: After being pardoned by Governor Anandiben Patel, Udaybhan Karwariya, a former Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA who was convicted of killing a Samajwadi Party legislator in 1996 and given a life sentence, was released from prison on Thursday.
Naini Central Jail senior superintendent Rang Bahadur Patel said that the release orders for Udaybhan Karwariya were received on Wednesday evening, and he was released on Thursday morning.
The governor, utilizing her powers under Article 161 of the Constitution, ordered Karwariya’s release after approving the state government’s recommendation for his early release.
Officials said that the pardon order was issued last week after Prayagraj’s senior superintendent of police and the district magistrate recommended Karwariya’s release due to his good conduct in jail.
On November 4, 2019, an additional sessions judge in Prayagraj sentenced Karwariya to life imprisonment for the murder of Samajwadi Party MLA Jawahar Yadav in August 1996.
Yadav was gunned down in Prayagraj, leading to a case being lodged against Karwariya, his brothers Kapilmuni Karwariya and Surajbhan Karwariya, and one other person.
