New Delhi, August 1: The University Grants Commission announced on Thursday that universities are permitted to administer their own entrance exams for undergraduate and postgraduate programs if there are still vacant seats after the regular admission rounds.

The goal of the decision is to ensure that no seats remain vacant in any program.

UGC Chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar while speaking to ANI highlighted the importance of every seat in universities. He also mentioned that the UGC has provided universities with standard operating procedures (SOPs) for incorporating Common University Entrance Test scores into the admissions process.

“This procedure includes multiple admissions rounds to fill seats. Central universities typically use the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores for admissions. If, after the first, second, and third rounds of admissions using CUET scores, some seats still remain vacant, the UGC has advised universities to relax the subject criteria to accommodate more students,” Jagadesh Kumar stated.

“In cases where seats are still not filled, universities are permitted to conduct their own entrance exams at the university level to fill these vacancies,” Jagadesh Kumar added.

Prof. Kumar emphasized the importance of filling every seat in universities, noting that each seat is valuable. He asked universities to make every effort to offer admission to students, ensuring that no seat goes unfilled.
