New Delhi, August 5: Following the death of students preparing for the UPSC exam at a coaching center in Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the safety norms in coaching centers in the city.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan issued notices to both the Government of India and the Delhi Government, seeking a response on the safety regulations implemented in coaching centres.
Coaching centres have turned into death chambers: SC
During the hearing, the Supreme Court made a stern remark, stating that coaching centers are playing with the lives of children and have turned into “death chambers.”
The Supreme Court has also asked the Attorney General to assist the court in this matter.

The court expressed the opinion that if coaching centres do not meet safety norms, they should be moved to an online mode. However, the court clarified that they are not taking such a step at this moment.
On July 27, three students lost their lives due to flooding in Rau’s IAS Study Circle located in a basement in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi.
Coaching Center Federation President, Secretary and Treasurer fined Rs 1 lakh
During the hearing, the Supreme Court imposed a fine of one lakh rupees on the President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Coaching Centers Federation, who had filed a petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s order.
Notably, the Delhi High Court had ordered the closure of all coaching centres without a fire NOC following the fire incident at a Mukherjee Nagar coaching institute. The Coaching Federation of India had approached the Supreme Court against this order.
