Dhaka, August 6: After a coup in Bangladesh, the Army has taken the initiative to form an interim government. It has been reported that Nobel Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus will be the chief advisor to this interim government. The coordinators of the ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’ announced this on Tuesday.
According to Bangladeshi media, one of the movement’s main coordinators, Nahid Islam, posted a video on social media on Tuesday morning. In this post, Nahid Islam stated that internationally renowned Nobel Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus will be the chief advisor of the interim government as he has widespread acceptance.
It was said that at the request of the student community, Professor Yunus has agreed to take on the responsibility of chief advisor to save the country. The names of other members of the interim government will be announced soon. The framework for forming the interim government under Professor Yunus’s leadership is being prepared.
Only the Govt proposed by students will be accepted: Nahid
Nahid urged the President to take immediate steps to form an interim government under the leadership of Dr. Yunus. He also warned that any government other than the one proposed by the students will not be accepted.
The student community has declared that they will not accept any military government, a government supported by the army, or a fascist government.
Chaos has spread in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina suddenly resigned from the position of Prime Minister and left the country on a military plane.
People’s lives are at risk, and Nahid urged the President to take immediate and effective steps to restore law and order in the country. He also mentioned the possibility of taking to the streets to assist law enforcement forces.
President orders release of former PM Khaleda Zia
A few hours before Nahid Islam’s announcement, Bangladesh’s President Mohammad Shahabuddin declared that an interim government would be formed as soon as possible after dissolving the parliament.
In a late-night televised address to the nation on Monday, Shahabuddin stated that he had accepted Sheikh Hasina’s resignation from the position of Prime Minister and had ordered the release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who had been under house arrest after being convicted in several cases.
Notably, as news of Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country spread, hundreds of people stormed her residence, vandalizing and looting it. Over the past 15 days, more than 300 people have died in anti-government protests across the country.
