Kolkata, August 18: Junior doctors across the country have been on strike for the past 10 days in protest against the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Junior doctors in West Bengal’s government hospitals are also demonstrating, demanding justice, and the protests continue today, Sunday. The doctors are calling for the swift punishment of the perpetrators and the public release of the victim’s autopsy report.
Due to the doctors’ strike, healthcare services have been disrupted for the 10th consecutive day in the state. However, senior doctors are still providing services in the emergency departments.
Female doctor’s body was found in seminar hall on August 9
On August 9, a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found with injuries in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. An autopsy later revealed that she had been raped before being murdered. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 and is currently in CBI custody.

Prohibitory orders imposed near RG Kar MCH from 18 to 24 August
The Kolkata Police have imposed a prohibitory order around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) from Sunday, August 18, to August 24. This order bans the gathering of five or more people and holding assemblies.
According to the police notification, Section 163(2) of the BNSs has been enforced from the area surrounding the hospital up to Shyambazar Five-Point Crossing. The order states that violators may face action under Section 223 of the BNS, 2023. The RG Kar Hospital has become a focal point for protests following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee female doctor.
CBI probing the case
Notably, the Calcutta High Court ordered on August 13, that the investigation of this case be handed over to the CBI. The court also instructed the Kolkata Police to transfer the case diary to the central investigative agency by August 13 evening and to submit all other documents by August 14 morning at 10 a.m. Following the court’s order, the CBI began its investigation on August 14.
