Dhanbad Nov 18: IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has roped in Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) Ranchi to provide scientific farming training to remote Gopalpur villagers of the Jamtara district.
In this regard, a team of IIT ISM Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering under Prof Rashmi Singh along with BAU Ranchi experts, Prof BK Agrawal and Prof MK Barnwal, visited Gopalpur village of Jamtara and guided the farmers about agriculture practices as per quality.
The day-long programme was organized at the request of Gopalpur Mukhiya Suraj Hembra. The training is part of the Department of Science and Technology project ‘Improve the Economic well-being of Scheduled Tribe Communities Through Strategic Intervention’.

BAU Ranchi’s Prof BK Aggarwal (soil chemistry expert) and Prof MK Barnwal (Plant Pathology expert) tipped the farmers about soil quality and texture, soil health cards and plant diseases. They also guided them about the use of fertilizers for improving the yield of crops, quality of seed and income through cropping systems.
“The training programme was organized on request of the Mukhiya of the village who made it during a workshop conducted by us in the village on October 27,” said Prof Rashmi Singh who is the Principal Investigator of the project and was accompanied by Prof Niladri Das as Co-Principal Investigator.
Sumita, Asha, Kalyani, Roushan, Asha Hembrom, Virendra Kisku, Md Shahnawaz and Pritia (research scholars) were the team members.
Prof Singh said that during a visit to the village on October 27 they observed that the irrigation facilities were not up to the mark in the village even though river Ajay flows through the middle of the village.
“During the training today we apprised the villagers about the crops which can grow even with the requirement of scanty water,” she said.
Suraj Hembram, Mukhiya of Gopalpur highly appreciated the programme and said the training helped the farmers of the village a lot as besides the soil quality, texture, and seed quality we also came to know about the soil health card, which is used to determine the current status of soil health.
