Ranchi, Sept 8: A girl junior resident (non-academic) doctor was harassed in the lift at Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Ranchi hospital on Sunday morning. The perpetrator was arrested on the spot.
Following the incident, all junior resident doctors have gone on a pen-down strike in protest demanding security for medicos in the hospital. Negotiations with striking house surgeons and the Assistant Medical Superintendent (AMS) were in progress in the evening.
The Junior Doctors Association (JDA) RIMS office-bearers said that the incident occurred at around 10 am. The junior resident was going to her duty in the oncology department in the lift when the perpetrator harassed her.
Perpetrator arrested
The doctors on duty immediately caught him after getting a complaint from the junior resident doctor and brought him to the integrated control room. He was later forwarded to the Bariatu police station. Head of the Department Dr Ajit Kumar has also lodged an institutional FIR.

Doctors demand deployment of liftmen
In protest of the incident, house surgeons of all departments have begun pen-down strikes demanding the deployment of liftmen in all lifts of the hospital, immediate implementation of one patient one attendance policy in all wards and enhancement of the numbers of security guards in the hospital.
Agitating junior resident doctors said that at present only one guard is posted on the ground floor, one in OPD and one on the 3rd floor of the oncology ward. They want at least two guards should be deployed to ensure security.
An agitating house surgeon said that at present only house surgeons of all departments are agitating but if full-proof security is not deployed the Junior Doctors Association, IMA Medical Students Network and Resident Doctors Network (PG) will also join in protest.
