Ranchi, September 18: The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday held a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed to address the rising crimes against women and minor girls, including school children, in various districts of Jharkhand.

During the hearing the state’s Home Secretary Vandana Dadel, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Secretary of Women and Child Development, the Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi, the Municipal Commissioner, and the Ranchi SSP appeared before the court.

In response, the Home Secretary informed the court that she would meet with all school managements to ensure that school children return home safely and are provided with a fear-free environment.

The state government requested time to submit suggestions, which the court accepted, asking for information on suggestions through an affidavit by September 30.

HC directs for publicity of helpline numbers

Additionally, the court directed the government to ensure widespread publicity of the helpline numbers issued for crime prevention, so that people can use them when needed.

The public interest litigation in this matter was filed by women advocate Bharti Kaushal, while the state government’s case was presented by Additional Advocate General Sachin Kumar.

A division bench of the High Court’s Acting Chief Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Arun Kumar Rai heard the case.
