Ranchi, September 20: The origin of the name Palamu is doubtful. Some say Palamu was known to the Mughals as ‘Palaun’ or ‘Palaon’. Others have something different to offer.
However, President Droupadi Murmu today revealed here how Palamu was named.
“On going to Palamu, I came to know that Palamu is named after Palash, Lah and Mahua,” Murmu, the former Governor of Jharkhand, said.
The occasion was the centenary celebrations of the Ranchi-based National Institute of Secondary Agriculture (NISA), which is mandated to promote lac cultivation across the country.

The NISA, originally known as the Indian Lac Research Institute (ILRI) had been renamed as Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums (IINRG) on September 20, 2007.
Jharkhand produces 55 per cent lac production
The President said Jharkhand produces 55 per cent lac production of the country and stressed promoting the agriculture-based industry to increase the income of farmers.
“This institute has not only efficiently carried out research and development work related to agriculture but has also ensured that such research reaches the ground,” she added.
President Murmu’s advice to scientists
President Murmu advised scientists to enlighten farmers about secondary agriculture. She said ICAR could play an effective role in this regard.
She said farmers’ income will be increased after training of processing units to farmers, adding the use of waste material by farmers will also help them to financial strengthening.
Underlining her special affection towards Jharkhand, she said, “Coming to the land of Dharti Aba Birsa Munda is like a pilgrimage for her.”
Murmu said that it was learned that the raw lac used to be sent for Rs 100-200 but later when it was sent abroad, its price was Rs 3000-4000.
President has always guided Jharkhand: CM
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Hemant Soren said in his address that the arrival of President Droupadi Murmu in Ranchi is a matter of pride for all of us. “She was the Governor of Jharkhand for 6 years. During this time, this state has always received her guidance. Today, even while holding the post of President, she has a deep attachment to Jharkhand,” he added.
Take a pledge to make farmers self-reliant
The chief minister said that in today’s materialistic era, there is a need to take strong steps to keep farmers connected to agriculture, increase the income of farmers, and promote and encourage animal husbandry along with alternative farming.
On this occasion, Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and Minister of Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth also expressed their views.
