Mumbai, Sept 26: A Mumbai court on Thursday handed Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut a 15-day simple imprisonment sentence in a defamation case brought by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
The metropolitan magistrate at Sewree court found the Rajya Sabha member guilty under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for defamation) and also levied a fine of Rs 25,000.

In May 2022, Medha Kirit Somaiya filed a defamation lawsuit worth Rs 100 crore against Sanjay Raut in the Bombay High Court.
Raut has alleged that Medha Kirit Somaiya and her husband were involved in a Rs 100 crore scam related to the construction of public toilets within the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction.
Medha Somaiya filed a complaint against Raut, alleging that he made malicious and baseless statements about her in the media.
