 Maharashtra Cabinet urges Centre for Bharat Ratna to Ratan Tata, passes resolution

Mumbai, Oct 10: The Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, passed a resolution on Thursday requesting the Centre to award the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honour, to veteran industrialist Ratan Tata, who recently passed away in Mumbai, in acknowledgment of his significant contributions.

During today’s state cabinet meeting, tributes were paid to Padma Vibhushan Ratan Tata, and the Cabinet also approved a condolence proposal regarding his passing.

Veteran industrialist and chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata died at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital late on Wednesday night. He was 86 and died of prolonged illness.

Ratan Tata, who ran the conglomerate for more than 20 years as chairman, had been undergoing intensive care at the Mumbai hospital since Monday.

A day of mourning in Jharkhand and Maharashtra

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Wednesday night that the last rites will be conducted with full state honours. The Maharashtra government has announced a day of mourning in honour of Ratan Tata.

The Jharkhand government also announced a day of state mourning today. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings. All cultural events scheduled for today have been cancelled. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has also expressed his condolences over Ratan Tata’s passing.
