Omar Abdullah takes oath as CM of Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 16: Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference (NC), took the oath on Wednesday as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

NC MLA Surinder Singh Choudhary, who made headlines by defeating state BJP chief Ravinder Raina, has been named Deputy Chief Minister.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) where Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Saxena administered the oath of office to Abdullah and his council of ministers.

LG Sinha also administered the oath to National Conference MLAs Javed Ahmed Rana from Mendhar, Javid Ahmad Dar from Rafiabad, Sakina Itoo from DH Pora, and Surinder Singh Chowdhary as cabinet ministers.

Satish Sharma, an Independent MLA from the Chhamb assembly seat, was included in the Omar Abdullah-led cabinet.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Numerous leaders from the INDIA Bloc attended the swearing-in ceremony of Abdullah, including Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, CPI (Marxist) leader Prakash Karat, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, DMK MP Kanimozhi, AAP leader Sanjay Singh, and CPI leader D Raja. Additionally, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti was also present at the event.

The Congress-National Conference alliance won a total of 48 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, with the National Conference securing 42 seats and Congress capturing six. BJP won 29 seats.
