Dhanbad, Oct 18: Jharkhand’s rising chess star, Adhiraj Mitra, shares the lead with Bihar’s Shubham Kumar and Rupesh Ramchandra, all with 5 points, following the completion of the fifth round at the Chaibasa FIDE Chess Tournament held at St. Xavier Welfare Centre.

In the fourth round, Adhiraj Mitra secured a victory against Tafsir Alam from Bihar, while Shubham Kumar triumphed over Sankhdeep Maiti from Bengal. Rupesh Ramchandra from Bihar outperformed Jharkhand’s Manish Sharma. Defending champion Anurag Jaiswal faced a challenging match against Ahanjit Benerjee from Bengal, resulting in a draw.

Looking ahead to the sixth round scheduled for tomorrow, Adhiraj Mitra will compete against Shubham Kumar, while Rupesh Ramchandra will clash with Gagan Sahu from Chhattisgarh. Additionally, Asani Pathak from Bengal will face Somalia Mandal in a pivotal match for the top position in the title race.

92-year-old and 5-year-old players in spotlight

Organizing secretary Basant Khandelwal noted that the tournament features a remarkable age range, with K. Subramanian, a 92-year-old participant from Tamil Nadu, and Rahul Pradhan, a 5-year-old player from Bengal, both earning two points thus far.

Navnil Das, the tournament’s only handicapped player from Uttar Pradesh, has achieved an impressive score of 3.5 points in five rounds.

International Arbiter (IA) Jayant Bhuyan, overseeing the tournament, reported that all matches have been conducted smoothly, with no player lodging any complaints.
