Bijapur, Oct 30: A senior official reported on Wednesday that five Naxalites, including a woman who was carrying a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh and was wanted for police attacks, have surrendered in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh.

The official stated that they surrendered before senior police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials on Tuesday, citing their disillusionment with the atrocities committed by senior cadres and the inhuman and hollow nature of Maoist ideology.

He noted that the cadres were also influenced by the state’s “Niyad Nellanar” (your good village) scheme, which aims to promote development projects in remote villages.

According to the official, of the five who surrendered, Sushila, also known as Bujji, was a member of the Aheri area committee under the Gadchiroli division of Maoists and had a reward of Rs 5 lakh on her head.

The official stated that she was reportedly involved in at least seven shootings targeting police teams from 2018 to 2023 in the Gadchiroli area along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh inter-state border.

He added that each of the surrendered Naxalites received assistance of Rs 25,000 and will be rehabilitated according to the government’s policy.

Police reported that 185 Naxalites have abandoned violence in the district this year, in addition to the arrest of 411 Naxalites during the same timeframe.
