Brisbane, Dec 18: India’s leading off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, announced his immediate retirement from international cricket on Wednesday.

Ashwin announced his decision during the post-match press conference alongside captain Rohit Sharma, following the conclusion of the third Test match against Australia in Brisbane which ended in a draw.

Ashwin concludes his career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 537 wickets in 106 matches, trailing only Anil Kumble’s record of 619 dismissals.

Ashwin will remain active in T20 cricket and is set to represent the Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 IPL season.

During a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma, Ashwin said, “I won’t take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer.” He declined to answer any questions and departed after making the announcement.

“He was very, very sure of his decision. We should stand by what he wants,” Rohit stated Ashwin exited the stage.
