Prayagraj, Jan 13: The 45-day-long Maha Kumbh has commenced at the Sangam shore in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, with the holy bath on Paush Purnima.
In a post on X, Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath informed that around 1.5 crore devotees had taken a sacred dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers (Triveni Sangam) today.
“Hearty congratulations to all the saints, Kalpvasis, devotees who have got the chance to take a dip in the Sangam on the auspicious occasion of ‘Paush Purnima’ in the auspicious festival of humanity ‘Mahakumbh 2025’. On the first bathing festival today, 1.50 crore Sanatan believers earned the holy benefit of bathing in the uninterrupted and clean Triveni,” CM yogi posted on X.

Foreign devotees are also participating in the ritual by taking dips in the Sangam. According to reports, approximately 1 crore pilgrims have arrived for the Kumbh bath.
The government has carefully planned the event with extensive arrangements. These include 1.5 lakh toilets, 15,000 sanitation workers, 2,500 Ganga Seva Doots (volunteers), and 1.5 lakh tents within the Mela area.
The state has also set up 69,000 LED lights, including solar-powered streetlights, 2,750 cameras for crowd monitoring, and a 24/7 Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). Furthermore, there will be 10 digital lost-and-found centres, 25,000 workers on the ground, and parking facilities covering 1,800 hectares.

Extensive security arrangements at Maha Kumbh Mela
Extensive security arrangements have been made for the Maha Kumbh. Teams from the RAF, police, and CRPF are deployed on-site to ensure the safety of devotees.
Police officers are conducting regular patrols at the Kumbh Mela for security purposes. Additionally, Uttar Pradesh Police has set up a special temporary police post to assist the pilgrims.
An official stated that over 10,000 personnel from local police stations and paramilitary forces have been deployed for the Maha Kumbh.
Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar stated that the Maha Kumbh 2025 began with the morning bath, with around 60 lakh devotees taking a dip so far. He described this year’s Kumbh as a fusion of tradition and modernity.
According to him, the police have shifted from conventional methods to extensive use of technology to provide enhanced facilities for devotees. He also mentioned that a flower shower is planned for the day and stated that all proceedings are running smoothly. Efforts are being made to ensure the Kumbh is grand, divine, digital, and secure.

PM Modi, UP CM Yogi extend greetings
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the commencement of Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, describing it as a momentous occasion for millions who cherish India’s values and cultural heritage.
“A very special day for crores of people who cherish Bharatiya values and culture. Maha Kumbh 2025 commences in Prayagraj, bringing together countless people in a sacred confluence of faith, devotion and culture. The Maha Kumbh embodies India’s timeless spiritual heritage and celebrates faith and harmony,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath also extended his greetings on the commencement of the Maha Kumbh.
“Greetings on Paush Purnima. The world’s largest spiritual and cultural gathering ‘Mahakumbh’ is starting from today in the holy city of Prayagraj. All the revered saints, Kalpvasis and devotees who have come to experience unity in diversity, to meditate and take a holy bath at the confluence of faith and modernity are heartily welcomed. May Maa Ganga fulfil all your wishes. Best wishes for the inauguration and first bath of Maha Kumbh Prayagraj. Sanatan Pride-Maha Kumbh Festival,” CM Yogi posted on X.
