Dhanbad, Jan 30: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, to review the designs and drawings of tunnels and their supporting structures.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT ISM Dhanbad; Prof. Sagar Pal, Dean of Research & Development; and Prof. Bhanwar Singh Choudhary from the Department of Mining Engineering.
Representing the government were D. Sarangi, Director General (Road Development) and Special Secretary, MoRTH; Rahul Gupta, Chief Engineer, MoRTH; and Ramshid Padusha from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

MoRTH will leverage IIT ISM Dhanbad’s expertise
According to officials, under this agreement, MoRTH will leverage IIT ISM Dhanbad’s expertise to review technical designs and structural drawings of tunnels, identify necessary improvements, and recommend remedial measures as needed.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Bhanwar Singh Choudhary emphasized the significance of this collaboration. He stated that the MoRTH would greatly benefit from IIT ISM’s in-depth knowledge and advanced technical expertise in assessing tunnel designs and providing actionable recommendations to ensure structural safety and efficiency.
“This partnership marks a significant step toward strengthening the development and maintenance of road infrastructure in India, with a focus on innovative engineering solutions for tunnel projects,” he added.
