New Delhi, Feb 12: The Supreme Court on Wednesday criticized the practice of announcing freebies before elections, stating that such measures discourage people from working as they receive free rations and financial aid without effort.

The remarks came from a Bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Augustine George Masih while hearing a case concerning the right to shelter for homeless individuals in urban areas.

“Unfortunately, due to these freebies, people are not willing to work. They receive free rations and financial support without doing any work,” Justice Gavai observed.

While acknowledging the concern for the homeless, the Bench questioned whether it would be more beneficial to integrate them into mainstream society and encourage their contribution to national development.

Attorney General R. Venkataramani informed the court that the Centre was in the process of finalizing the Urban Poverty Alleviation Mission, which would address various issues, including providing shelter for the urban homeless.

The Bench directed the Attorney General to confirm the timeline for implementing the mission and scheduled the next hearing for six weeks later.
