New Delhi, Feb 18: In a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations, India and Qatar have elevated their ties to a strategic partnership, focusing on trade, investments, technology, energy, and people-to-people exchanges.

The decision was formalized following comprehensive discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The two leaders also deliberated on regional and global matters of mutual concern, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu welcomed the Amir at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he was accorded a ceremonial guard of honor, with Modi also present. Discussions between Modi and the Amir later took place at Hyderabad House, covering various bilateral aspects.

As part of this visit, India and Qatar formalized their commitment to deeper cooperation by exchanging an agreement to establish a strategic partnership.

The document exchange took place between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in the presence of Prime Minister Modi and the Amir.

This marks Sheikh Tamim’s second state visit to India, following his first in March 2015, and comes at Modi’s invitation.
