New Delhi, Feb 24: Vijender Gupta, BJP MLA from Rohini, was elected as the Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday.

His nomination was proposed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and, following tradition, she and Leader of Opposition Atishi escorted him to the Speaker’s chair.

The first session of the eighth legislative assembly commenced the same day. Earlier, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena administered the oath to BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely at Raj Niwas, appointing him as the Protem Speaker.

Following this, Rekha Gupta, who represents Shalimar Bagh, took the oath as a member of the 8th Legislative Assembly.
Later, Vijender Gupta was formally elected as the Speaker of the House.
