Chennai, March 22: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Saturday expressed concerns over the lack of transparency in the Union government’s approach to delimitation, demanding that any such exercise should be open and inclusive. DMK-led JAC passed a resolution on the issue of delimitation.

The committee, led by Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, called for an extension of the freeze on Parliamentary constituencies, based on the 1971 Census Population, for the next 25 years to protect states that have implemented effective population control measures.

In the resolution, the JAC emphasized that delimitation should improve democracy, with all political parties, state governments, and stakeholders being consulted. They argued that states with declining population shares due to successful population control policies should not be penalized.

The committee also announced plans to bring the issue to the forefront by encouraging state legislatures to pass resolutions on delimitation and launch a public awareness campaign about the history and impact of past exercises.

MPs from the represented states will coordinate efforts to block any delimitation exercise that does not align with these principles, with a joint representation to be submitted to the Prime Minister during the current Parliamentary session.

The meeting, chaired by Stalin in Chennai, was attended by leaders from various states and political parties, including Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das, and Biju Janata Dal leader Sanjay Kumar Das Burma and others. The next JAC meeting will take place in Hyderabad, Telangana.
