New Delhi, April 3: The Supreme Court on Thursday nullified the recruitment of 25,753 teachers and other staff in state-run and state-aided schools across West Bengal, citing flaws and irregularities in the selection process.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justice Sanjay Kumar, upheld the Calcutta High Court’s April 22, 2024, verdict that had previously declared these appointments invalid.

Despite the annulment, the court clarified that affected employees would not be required to return the salaries and benefits they had received. Additionally, in a humanitarian concession, disabled employees were allowed to retain their positions.

The bench also directed the West Bengal government to conduct a fresh selection process and ensure its completion within three months.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court scheduled the state government’s plea, which challenges the high court’s order for a CBI probe into the matter, for hearing on April 4.

The verdict followed a series of petitions on the issue, with the court having reserved its judgment on February 10.
