New Delhi, April 22: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear next week a plea seeking contempt proceedings against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over his controversial remarks alleging that Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna is “responsible for civil wars” and accusing the Supreme Court of “leading the country towards anarchy.”

On April 19, Dubey publicly criticized the apex court for its interventions in matters such as the Waqf (Amendment) Act and timelines for presidential assent to bills, stating that if the judiciary is going to dictate laws, “then Parliament and Assemblies should be shut down.” His comments, widely circulated on social media, triggered backlash from the legal community.

The plea, filed by advocate Narendra Mishra, calls the MP’s statements “false, malicious, and reckless,” arguing they amount to criminal contempt and are a direct attack on the judiciary’s independence.

Mishra pointed out that Dubey, as a sitting MP, has shown contempt for constitutional institutions by inciting public distrust and mischaracterizing judicial review as political interference.

The matter was mentioned before a bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and Augustine George Masih, who agreed to list the case next week.

Mishra has urged the court to order the removal of derogatory social media posts and videos and to initiate suo motu criminal contempt proceedings. He also noted that letters had been sent to the Attorney General and Solicitor General, but no action had been taken.

Several lawyers have also written to Attorney General R. Venkataramani, demanding contempt action against Dubey for his inflammatory statements.
