Dhanbad, April 23: Om Prakash Sinha, an alumnus of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, has been appointed as the Director (Exploration) of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC).
A 1987 batch B.Tech graduate in Petroleum Engineering, Sinha was selected after a rigorous evaluation process conducted by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB).
ONGC, a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, announced the selection following interviews held on April 17, 2025.

Selection from a Pool of Experienced Candidates
Sinha’s name was recommended by the PESB after he emerged as the top candidate among 12 aspirants. The selection panel interviewed candidates from various leading organizations, including seven from ONGC itself, two from Oil India Limited, and one each from Pawan Hans Limited, the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, and ONGC Videsh Limited.
Over Three Decades of Expertise
Currently serving as Executive Director and Head of the Institute of Reservoir Studies in Ahmedabad, Sinha brings over 30 years of experience in hydrocarbon exploration and reservoir management. His technical expertise and leadership have played a key role in ONGC’s exploration efforts.
Key Responsibilities as Director (Exploration)
In his new role, Sinha will serve on ONGC’s Board of Directors. He will be responsible for formulating and implementing exploration strategies, enhancing oil and gas reservoir performance, maintaining healthy reserve replacement ratios, designing production facilities for new discoveries, and exploring advanced technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
