Dhanbad, May 31: Prof. Sanjit Kumar Pal, Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, has been selected for the National Geoscience Award 2024 for his outstanding contributions in the field of Geophysics. The award, conferred by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, recognizes exemplary work in the geosciences.
According to IIT ISM officials, the National Geoscience Award in Geophysics/Applied Geophysics is presented annually to individuals for their innovations and advancements in geophysical exploration, geomagnetism, geophysical survey techniques, instrumentation, and the application of modern geophysical methods.

Pioneering Work in Advanced Geophysical Techniques
Prof. Pal is widely acknowledged for his extensive and innovative work across a range of geophysical technologies. His expertise spans UAV-based and satellite remote sensing, gravity and magnetic methods, electrical resistivity tomography, seismic refraction and cross-hole tomography, and ground-penetrating radar, among others.
His selection for the National Geoscience Award is seen as a strong testament to his impactful contributions to geoscience, commitment to scientific innovation, and ability to address complex subsurface challenges using modern tools and interdisciplinary approaches.

Academic Background Rooted in Leading Institutions
Prof. Pal began his academic journey with a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Burdwan, followed by an M.Sc. Tech in Geophysics from Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He later completed his Ph.D. in Geophysics from IIT Kharagpur.
