Kolkata, June 23: Tempers flared in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Monday as four BJP MLAs—Dipak Burman, Shankar Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, and Manoj Oraon—were suspended for the rest of the session by Speaker Biman Banerjee.

The suspension triggered a political storm, with the BJP accusing the Trinamool Congress-led government of systematically stifling opposition voices within the House.

The controversy erupted during a heated debate over the expunging of certain previously made remarks. The four legislators protested vocally, leading to chaos in the Assembly. Marshals were later summoned to remove them from the chamber.

Speaking to the press, one of the suspended MLAs said, “We were exercising our democratic right to protest, but we were thrown out. This is nothing short of an attack on the opposition.”

Visuals later emerged from outside the Assembly, showing the suspended MLAs staging a demonstration at the main gate. Holding banners and raising slogans, they alleged that legislative processes were being manipulated to suppress dissent and demanded that the Speaker explain the rationale behind the action taken against them.

The BJP leadership has since intensified its criticism of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of consistently marginalizing opposition members and using Assembly rules as a tool to muzzle any form of disagreement.
