Union Cabinet approves Rs 5,940 crore for Jharia rehabilitation

New Delhi, June 25: A Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of the Emergency by passing a resolution condemning the period and honouring those who bravely resisted it.

A two-minute silence was observed in honour of individuals whose rights were curtailed during the period.

During the same meeting, the Cabinet approved key development proposals, including ₹5,940 crore for the long-pending rehabilitation of affected families in the Jharia coalfield and ₹3,626 crore for the expansion of Metro Line 2 in Pune.

The Cabinet also congratulated Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla on the successful launch of his space mission. Prime Minister Modi, who informed the Cabinet of the launch, described it as a proud and historic moment for the nation.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw later briefed the media on the Emergency resolution, calling June 25, 1975, a dark chapter in Indian history—a “Constitutional Murder Day.”

He said the Emergency sought to dismantle the spirit of the Indian Constitution, weaken federalism, and suspend fundamental rights, human liberty, and dignity. The Cabinet recalled how efforts began as early as 1974 to crush the Nav Nirman movement and JP’s Total Revolution.

Vaishnaw emphasised that the resolution is a reminder of the people’s unwavering belief in India’s democratic ethos. He said it is important for the youth to draw inspiration from those who opposed authoritarian tendencies and stood firm in defence of constitutional values.

Reiterating India’s role as the cradle of democracy, the Cabinet called for renewed commitment to protect constitutional principles and preserve the nation’s democratic and federal spirit.
