University of Texas geophysicist delivers expert talk at IIT ISM Dhanbad

Dhanbad, June 26: Prof. Mrinal K. Sen, a globally recognized geophysicist from the University of Texas, Austin, delivered an expert lecture on the topic “An Overview of Full Waveform Inversion for Subsurface Characterization” at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on Wednesday. The event was organized by the Department of Applied Geophysics.

In his insightful session, Prof. Sen—who is associated with the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas—outlined the fundamental concepts, current limitations, and recent advancements in Full Waveform Inversion (FWI).

Highlighting Applications Across Domains

During his talk, Prof. Sen explained how seismic data—both from active and passive sources—are extensively used for subsurface imaging across a wide range of applications. These include oil and gas exploration, earthquake analysis, CO₂ storage monitoring, geotechnical assessments, non-destructive testing, and even medical imaging.

He introduced Full Waveform Inversion as a state-of-the-art technique that utilizes the complete seismic waveform to solve complex inverse problems, enabling more accurate estimation of subsurface velocity structures.

The session was held at the New Academic Complex (NAC) and witnessed active participation from faculty members, research scholars, and students, who engaged enthusiastically with the expert.

Earlier, Prof. Sanjit Kumar Pal, Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT ISM, welcomed Prof. Sen and emphasized the significance of such academic interactions in fostering advanced research and innovation at the institute.
