Ranchi, June 30: On the occasion of Hul Diwas—observed on June 30 to commemorate the Santhal uprising of 1855—Chief Minister Hemant Soren paid tribute to the tribal leaders and freedom fighters Sidhu-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano in New Delhi. He offered garlands in their memory and praised their courage in leading one of the earliest uprisings against British rule in India.

“Hul is not just a historical event—it is our strength, our identity. It is a day of resolution for us,” Soren said in a message posted on X. He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fighting for a tribal religious code and the preservation of tribal culture, language, and identity.

President and Governor Join in Remembrance

President Droupadi Murmu marked the day with a tribute on X, honouring the Santhal revolutionaries and stating that their sacrifice and martyrdom will always be remembered.

Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar also paid his respects, noting that the stories of their struggle against colonial rule will continue to inspire generations to come.

Hul Diwas: A Day of Pride for Jharkhand

Hul Diwas holds deep significance for the Santhal community and all of Jharkhand. The Santhal rebellion of 1855–56, led by Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu, was a major resistance movement against British colonial exploitation. Fought over the rights to land, forest, water, and identity, the rebellion saw the participation of thousands of tribal people and stands as a defining moment in India’s freedom struggle.
