THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Dubai, July 9: India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has surged to rank sixth in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings following his remarkable performance in the second Test against England at Edgbaston.

Gill played a pivotal role in India’s victory, amassing scores of 269 and 161 — a match-winning effort that not only marked his first Test win as captain but also propelled him 15 spots up to a career-best sixth position.

With just 79 rating points separating him from the top-ranked batter, Gill now sits just behind Harry Brook (rank 1), Joe Root (rank 2), Kane Williamson (rank 3), Yashasvi Jaiswal (rank 4), and Steve Smith (rank 5).

Meanwhile, England’s Harry Brook has reclaimed the top spot in the Test batting rankings, overtaking teammate Joe Root. Brook’s impressive 158-run knock in the first innings against India helped him leapfrog Root, who now trails by 18 points and slips to second place in the latest update.

The latest reshuffle in the rankings also saw young England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith achieve his highest career ranking. His unbeaten 184 followed by 88 in the same Test match lifted him 16 places to enter the top 10, now sitting at 10th position.

In other notable movements, South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder rocketed 34 places to 22nd in the batting charts after his marathon 367* against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Mulder, who declared South Africa’s innings at 626/5 despite having a chance to surpass Brian Lara’s record for the highest individual Test score, also jumped 12 positions to reach No.3 among Test all-rounders.

India’s Ravindra Jadeja continues to lead the Test all-rounders chart, while Jasprit Bumrah holds firm as the top-ranked Test bowler even after missing the second Test against England.

Mohammed Siraj, on the other hand, moved up six spots to 22nd following a strong bowling performance.
