26th Kargil Vijay Diwas: President, PM, Defence Minister, military chiefs pay tributes to martyrs

New Delhi, July 26: India on Saturday marked the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas with solemn tributes and nationwide remembrance of the heroes who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil conflict.

The day, observed annually on July 26, honours the courage and indomitable spirit of the Indian Armed Forces that secured victory against Pakistani intruders.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the commemorations at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, where he paid homage along with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, and Naval Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.

Commemorations were also held in Drass, Kargil, where Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth joined locals and students in a padyatra, symbolising unity and gratitude.

Families of Kargil War martyrs gathered at the Kargil War Memorial to honour their loved ones, many capturing moments beside the engraved names of the fallen heroes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings on the occasion and paid homage to the fallen soldiers.

“Heartfelt greetings to the countrymen on Kargil Vijay Diwas. This occasion reminds us of the unparalleled courage and valour of those brave sons of Mother India who dedicated their lives to protect the nation’s pride. Their passion to sacrifice everything for the motherland will continue to inspire every generation,” PM Modi posted on X.

President Droupadi Murmu also saluted the bravery of the armed forces, writing on X: “On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. This day symbolises the extraordinary valour, courage, and steadfast determination of our jawans. Their dedication and supreme sacrifice for the nation will forever inspire its citizens.”
