Dhanbad, July 31: President of India Droupadi Murmu will confer the President’s Gold Medal on Priyanshu Sharma, the top-ranking B.Tech graduate in Computer Science and Engineering, during the 45th convocation of IIT (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad tomorrow (August 1).

According to IIT-ISM officials, a total of 1,880 students from the 2024–25 batch will be awarded degrees across various disciplines, marking their formal induction into the league of accomplished alumni.

In recognition of academic excellence, 37 students will receive gold medals, 35 will be awarded silver medals, and 21 will be presented with sponsored medals and awards during the ceremony.

“The convocation holds special significance as it is a central part of the institute’s Centenary Celebrations, symbolizing 100 years of unwavering dedication to nation-building through science, technology, and education,” an official said.

Established on December 9, 1926, IIT (ISM) began as the Indian School of Mines and Applied Geology.

Modelled on the Royal School of Mines, London, the institute was founded with the aim of training highly skilled professionals for India’s rapidly growing mining industry.

The foundation of the institute was laid under the visionary guidance of its first principal, David Penman, and it was formally inaugurated by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India.
