Usha Martin University opens Centre for Ethics to champion integrity and leadership

Ranchi, August 14: Usha Martin University (UMU) has launched its , inaugurated by Chancellor Prabhat Kumar, former Governor of Jharkhand, with Chief Guest Dr. Amit Mukherjee delivering the inaugural lecture. The initiative marks a bold step toward fostering integrity, moral reasoning, and ethical leadership across the UMU community and beyond.

Vice Chancellor: Ethics Essential in a Changing World

In his welcome address, Vice Chancellor Madhulika Kaushik underscored the growing importance of ethics in education and professional life, particularly in a fast-changing, challenge-filled world. Prabhat Kumar urged, “Along with a Viksit Bharat, we must also build a Naitik Bharat,” encouraging everyone to exceed their own limits.

The Chancellor detailed the Centre’s mission to:

  • Partner with national and international institutions for research
  • Develop principled leaders
  • Engage with local communities, including UMU’s five adopted villages

Keynote Speaker Warns of Ethics Gap in Governance and Technology

Dr. Amit Mukherjee called for urgent attention to ethics in governance, business, science, and technology. He stressed the importance of self-discipline and balance between work, family, and personal life, praising UMU for shaping not just competent professionals, but responsible citizens.

Eminent Board to Steer Activities Year-Round

The Centre will be guided by an Advisory Board including Prof. R.A. Mashelkar and Prof. Sunil Shukla. The first-year agenda features:

  • Quarterly lectures by national and global thought leaders
  • Development of real-world case studies
  • Regular workshops, podcasts, and panel discussions

These programmes aim to keep ethics in active conversation both on campus and in society.

Chancellor Urges Students to Live Their Values

After the ceremony, Prabhat Kumar met with students and faculty, toured the Central Library, and suggested adding more books on ethics. He reminded the UMU community to not only study ethics, but to live it every day.
