Dhanbad, Aug 26: Out of 400 MBBS seats available in four government-run medical colleges of Jharkhand, a total of 294 were filled during the first round of counselling for the 2025 session. The counselling, held from August 19 to August 24, concluded on Sunday evening.
As per records, Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), Dhanbad, saw the highest number of admissions with 80 students, followed by 74 at Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH), Dumka.
Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), Palamu, recorded 72 admissions, while Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH), Jamshedpur, had 68. Data for Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH), Hazaribagh, was not available.
Seat structure and previous year’s record
Each of the five state-run medical colleges has approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 100 MBBS seats, including 15 under the all-India quota, two for central government nominees, and 83 for the state quota. Last year, all 500 MBBS seats across the state’s five institutions were filled.

At SNMMCH Dhanbad, admission in-charge Dr Ganesh Kumar informed that out of 80 admitted students, 77 were from the state quota and three from the all-India quota. Currently, 20 seats remain vacant, including six from the state quota, 12 from the all-India quota, and two reserved for central government nominees.
Details from individual colleges
Dr Ganesh Kumar added that although four students took admission under the all-India quota at SNMMCH, one later withdrew. “I hope the remaining 20 seats at SNMMCH will be filled in the second round of all-India counselling (August 29 to September 6) and the state counselling scheduled from September 6 to September 11,” he said.
At PJMCH Dumka, Principal Dr Arun Kumar Choudhary confirmed that 74 students enrolled, of which 73 were admitted under the state quota and one under the all-India quota.
Similarly, at MMCH Palamu, 72 students were admitted. Admission in-charge Dr Atul Prakash stated that 69 students took admission under the state quota, while three were admitted through the all-India quota.
Admissions at Jamshedpur college
MGMMCH Jamshedpur recorded 68 admissions. Prof. (Dr) N.K. Gadia said that 66 students enrolled under the state quota, while one each was admitted under the all-India quota and the central government nominee category.
