New Delhi, Sept 19: The Supreme Court has deferred to September 22 the hearing on bail pleas filed by former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider and others arrested in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots.

The bench of Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice Manmohan passed the order in the UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the riots in Delhi.

The petitioners have challenged the September 2, 2025, order of the Delhi High Court, which had denied them bail. The High Court had observed that “conspiratorial violence under the guise of protests can never be permitted.”

It may be noted that on the same day, another bench of the High Court had also rejected the bail plea of co-accused Tasleem Ahmed.

The High Court had further stated that while participating in peaceful protests and delivering speeches in public gatherings is a right protected under Article 19(1)(a), such rights cannot be misused.
