Chandigarh, Oct 17: Punjab Deputy Inspector General of Police (Ropar Range) Harcharan Singh Bhullar has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days after his arrest in a high-profile bribery case involving ₹8 lakh.

The senior officer was produced before a CBI court here on Friday following his medical examination.

Bhullar was arrested by the CBI on Thursday from his Mohali office after a scrap dealer from Mandi Gobindgarh accused him of demanding recurring monthly payments to “settle” a 2023 FIR. A middleman named Kirshanu was also arrested, with ₹21 lakh allegedly seized from him.

Subsequent searches at Bhullar’s Sector 40 residence in Chandigarh led to the recovery of around ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kg of jewellery, documents of properties, 22 luxury watches, keys to two high-end vehicles, locker keys, imported liquor, and several firearms with ammunition.

The FIR filed by the CBI states that Bhullar, through his associate, allegedly demanded and agreed to accept ₹8 lakh from the complainant for ensuring no further police action against his scrap business.

He also allegedly sought recurring payments—referred to as “sewa-paani”—and threatened the businessman with false criminal cases for non-compliance.

Appointed DIG (Ropar Range) in November 2024, Bhullar oversees Mohali, Rupnagar, and Fatehgarh Sahib districts. He is the son of former Punjab DGP M. S. Bhullar.
