Dhanbad, Oct 23: Prof. Arun Kumar Samanta from the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, has been adjudged the second runner-up in the Hackathon on Carbon Capture Technology – 2025.

The event was organized by the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI), Ranchi, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India.

Prof. Samanta’s research proposal was selected under Problem Statement–1: Direct Air Capture (DAC) of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). His work introduces an innovative approach for the direct removal of CO₂ from ambient air, utilizing cost-effective sorbents and a modular system design for scalable implementation.

With over 27 years of experience in teaching and research, Prof. Samanta has made significant contributions in the fields of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), gas purification, and clean coal technologies.

According to IIT (ISM) officials, Prof. Samanta has authored numerous research papers, supervised several doctoral and postgraduate scholars, and holds multiple patents related to hydrogen production and CO₂ capture systems.

He also leads key research initiatives at the Naresh Vashisht Centre for Hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Technologies at IIT (ISM).

Officials said his recognition at this national platform underscores IIT (ISM)’s growing prominence in clean energy innovation and sustainable technology development.
