Dhanbad, Oct 28: Following the recent Chaibasa incident, Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Aditya Ranjan on Monday directed a comprehensive assessment of all operating blood units in the district to ensure safety and compliance with state health standards.

The directive came during his inspection of the Blood Bank at Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), where he emphasised the importance of maintaining strict monitoring at every stage of the blood collection and transfusion process.

 Inspection of Blood Bank Facilities

During the visit, DC Ranjan was accompanied by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajesh Kumar, Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr Alok Vishwakarma, SNMMCH Superintendent Dr D.K. Gindauria (who also holds the charge of Principal), Senior Hospital Manager Dr C.S. Suman, and Head of Medicine Department Dr Rajlaxmi Tubid.

After a detailed review, the DC noted that while SNMMCH’s blood bank machines are of high quality, continuous use has led to minor technical snags. He directed officials to repair and service the equipment at the earliest to maintain operational efficiency.

Emphasis on Safe Blood Collection and Testing

The Deputy Commissioner instructed hospital authorities to strictly monitor all stages of blood donation, from counselling and collection to testing and storage.
“Ensure that all collected blood is thoroughly tested for infectious diseases before being stored or transfused,” DC Ranjan said.

He also stressed that blood donation is a humanitarian service and should never be allowed to turn into a commercial activity.

Mobile Blood Donation Van and Rural Outreach

In a significant announcement, DC Ranjan said that a mobile blood donation van equipped with modern instruments and facilities will soon be made available in the district.

He further directed the Civil Surgeon Dr Alok Vishwakarma to closely monitor all blood donation camps, including those organised by private hospitals, and to promote camps even in remote rural areas to boost voluntary blood donation.

At the same time, he instructed that all camps be held strictly in accordance with state government guidelines, to prevent any recurrence of incidents similar to Chaibasa.
