Mumbai, Nov 24: INS Mahe — the first vessel of the newly developed Mahe-class shallow water anti-submarine fleet — formally joined the Indian Navy on Monday, strengthening the force’s coastal and sub-surface surveillance capability.

The warship has been engineered to track submarines, secure sea lanes close to shore, and carry out coastal patrol missions with enhanced stealth and rapid mobility.

The Navy described the platform as compact but potent, combining precision, speed and resilience — key traits required for operations in shallow and strategic maritime zones.

With advanced combat systems and a design optimised for agility, the vessel signifies a technological step forward in India’s littoral warfare preparedness.

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi presided over the commissioning ceremony, which marked the induction of a new category of fully indigenous combat-ready shallow-water craft.
