Dhaka, Dec 25: Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman arrived in Bangladesh today after 17 years.

He received a rousing welcome from his supporters upon landing in Dhaka from London. Reports said that around one lakh workers of his party, the BNP, gathered near the Dhaka airport to welcome him.
Bangladesh is scheduled to hold general elections on February 12 next year. With Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, having been banned, the prospects of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) winning the elections have increased.

Tarique met his relatives at the VIP lounge of Dhaka airport along with his wife Zubaida and daughter Zaima Rahman. He has arrived in Bangladesh to begin a new phase of his political career.
Tarique then proceeded towards the 36 July Expressway in a bulletproof bus, where he is set to address a rally. Notably, the BNP is considered to hold anti-India views.
According to information, Tarique Rahman was arrested on corruption charges during the tenure of the army-backed caretaker government that came to power in Bangladesh in January 2007.
After spending 18 months in jail, he was released on September 3, 2008. Subsequently, on September 11, 2008, he left for London with his family.
