Chennai, Dec 22: In a bribery case, the Special Judge for CBI Cases in Chennai sentenced an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, who was the Protector of Emigrants (POE) at the time, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a private individual (a recruiting agency) to four years of rigorous imprisonment.
The charged IRS officer R Sekar, who held the position of Protector of Emigrants (POE) in Chennai, and Anwar Hussain, a private individual functioning as a recruiting agent, have been imposed a fine of Rs. 18,000. The CBI initiated a case against these accused individuals and others.

Bribes for clearance of Emigration Certificates
According to the allegations, between 2007 and 2009, Anwar Hussain, R Sekar, and other individuals engaged in a conspiracy. As a result, Anwar Hussain allegedly obtained bribes in the form of ‘Speed Money’ from different recruiting agents in exchange for the clearance of Emigration Certificates that the agents had submitted. He then allegedly gave the bribe money to the Protector of Emigrants (POE) at the time as well as other public employees.
The other allegation was that of the bribe, about Rs 13 lakh was given to the other individual in order to facilitate the son of R Sekar’s admission to an engineering college.
A chargesheet was filed against the accused following the recovery of the aforementioned sum and an investigation. The accused were convicted by the Trial Court after it judged them guilty.
